Essential Composers/Exercises
I've just put in another thread that I'm practicing Bach. I always do some Bach. It always interesting as there is so much by him to choose from. Not only is it good music but technically challenging too
It go me to wondering, what are the composers/exercises that are so fundamental to your practice that you do them everyday?
HI Chelsea, very good question
I have to admit that I don't think I've ever had a composer that I have to play everyday, maybe that's down to the type of instrument that I play. I also don't think I've had one exercise that I have to do.
What I do have though is a certain type of exercise that I do everyday. Let's take my current practice on the bass as an example. Everyday I do something on scales, finger stretching and fingerpicking. I don't do the same exercise everyday - I like to change it up every couple of weeks to keep it fresh, keep my mind active.
When I was practising classical piano I did play Czerny most days so from that point of view I did use him as a defacto composer.
What would be really interesting is if we could get a list of exercises/composers that are basics/fundamental for each instrument. That would be really useful for all the readers.
As a sax player it gotta be Bird all the way. It's music and an exercise all in one.
depends on what sort of phase im going through. At the moment im into steve vai so im playing a lot of solos by him. gonna try some satriani next.

As a pianist I have done a lot of Bach, but I don't tend to now. I'm more into Jazz and commercial stuff. I dont really have any composer but I make sure to play through some standard sets of changes and 251s everyday because they are essential for the playing I want to do.
