The art of music is important in every human culture. And there is another great art that makes music possible: the art of practice. Every minute of music ever performed has been preceded by hundreds and thousands of hours of practice time. Those hours are precious. Art is long, life is busy, and practice time needs to be carved by hand from the rush and tumble of experience. But time so carved can be more than the means to a musical goal-it can be a haven from the sandstorm of details that we call the demands of daily life. It can be an oasis of refreshment and self-affirmation.
