I like your column. I have a lot of respect for musicians and music teachers. The things I experienced since 6th grade playing clarinet until 11th grade have been one of the only good memories of going to school. I felt I was with a team and we had to work together to get the sound of the piece right. Now, I study piano and I am learning new things that I always wanted to so it does come together as long as I get the best instructional material and apply myself with some goal in mind. Even though I feel strong about singing I am claiming the keyboard (electronic piano) as my main instrument so I can become a more accomplished musician. Jazz chord voicing is helping me tremendously.
I think you've hit on one of the most important aspects of playing music - doing it with others. This has to be one of the most rewarding things about it.
In business and work there is much talk of working as a 'team' but in reality it is not an equal divide of duties. In a musical group however you really do get everyone working as equals towards a common goal.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Enjoy your practice!

How To Practise
I play the violin and have for about 5 years know. I love it. I play in a Symphony. I have also played in a 6 person orchestra. I played piano for about 4 years before starting violin. So I have been playing music for about 9 years altogether. I play all string instruments but only take lesson for violin.
