About Mike Saville

Name:
Mike Saville
About Me:

I created How To Practice in 2006 to help other musicians practice better.

There is a lack of focus on good practice techniques from students and teachers. Without these techniques students give up more easily, progress more slowly and ingrain bad habits.

Hopefully through this site you will learn to think more about the practice that you do and realise that knowing how to practice effectively is as important as mastering any techniques or notes on your chosen instrument.

Re:

Hi Mike,
Great site, very interesting. Thanks for your excellent review of 'Practice is a Dirty Word.' Very valid points (though actually the blow-out of Chapter 5 on scales is geared to woodwind and brass rather than pianists who have the advantage of seeing the keyboard or string players who can simply follow patterns.) My own instrument is clarinet and there's no rhyme or reason about tone-tone-semitone for us. Move a thumb and we jump a twelfth; or move two fingers for a semitone. When examining music candidates, I often think I can see fog coming out of their ears, which is why I revamped the whole process to demystify the things. Yes, good point: at some stage I may improve the binding of 'Practice WAS a Dirty Word'. do you know my book 'Confident Music Performance'? I'd be happy to send you a copy. OK if I quote you on my website? (www.ruthbonetti.com) BTW, I closed my own FB account after being hacked. cheers, Ruth
