About katy
I am going to be a senior this fall. Music has been part of my life since third grade when I started to play recorder in my music class because it was a requirement. I really disliked the recorder, but nevertheless, I was inspired to start playing clarinet in fourth grade. I remember going to band concerts and musicals, and I was very intrigued and mesmerized by the music being performed. I loved the sound. I have been playing clarinet since then and still do today. My sophmore year I picked up the trombone and fell in love with it. My band director inspired me to start playing, and now I play trombone for everything. I don't practice clarinet as much as I used to. In eighth grade, I was inspired to become a band director. In ninth grade, there was a time when I no longer wished to major in music ed, but my new band director brought back my aspirations. I started learning piano my junior year when my director thought I should start to learn for college. There are no words to describe how much I like music. Therefore, music is my life, and I'm a huge band geek.= )

Re:
Hi Katy, there are a few things you can do to get a better tone. There is some value in doing long tones but I would question spending too much tie on them.
1. Make sure you know how you want to sound. Listen to good players and recordings of players you like. Before you play every note make sure you can hear in your head exactly what you want to sound like.
2. Keep the airflow constant. Move the air throught the trombone at the same speed all the time. If the air goes faster and slower your tone will wobble.
3. Breathe properly. Make sure you breath really deeply before everything you play.
4. Perhaps most importantly relax. Keep you next, shoulders, face etc as relaxed as you can whilst doing all of the above.
If you do these, every time you play your tone will get better. Also make sure to think about your sound everytime you play not just on your own. When in band rehearsal think about your sound - there will be moments when you don't have much to play which are an ideal time to think more about your own sound
